Building a business is hard & we all need a little help sometimes.

Following a decade of sales and business development for a range of wonderful SME and start-up companies, I stepped into free lance business consulting. A great experience which I enjoyed for 3 years, I particularly enjoyed the start-up stage and watching a concept develop into a product or service. Having not started my own brand before, at this time I was clueless as to how many plates you have spin at the same time and how fire-fighting can become your main job, not actually running the business or attending important sales meetings.

So I figured, what better way to learn than to start my own company. Blind Owl Coffee Co is 4 years old now, and having lived this from inception, I have gained a unique insight to what that journey is really like. Some days, you have no idea how but you seam to have only achieved sending three emails and paid the window cleaner, but you have been there for 11 hours!?

(This was an actual Tuesday at some point during summer of 2020)

It was around this time that I had to admit to myself that I had made countless mistakes and wasted a lot of time and money. The issue? I didn’t have the right people around me and I thought I could do it all myself. I couldn’t and there were things I was just not good at. Large businesses, with healthy recruitment budget invest in experience early door’s and without this, many smaller start-ups struggle to grow efficiently as they simply can’t afford it.

In my opinion there are three key people you need to build a solid foundation when setting up a business; Sales & Business Development, A book-keeper and Administration. Everyone else comes after. So what are you realistically looking at? £50k-£80k for your BDM, A further £30k for your book-keeper and let’s say £20k for administration and office support. They are worth it, of course. But when you simply don’t have a minimum of £100k per year to spend on a team, you have no option but to do it all yourself

I want to offer what I didn’t have on an ad-hock basis; access to a trusted network of really useful professionals that are there when you need it, not only to bounce ideas off or to call when you feel overwhelmed but if you want; to actually get there hands dirty and really stuck in with the day to day with you.
